Painter's mussel
The painter's mussel, scientific name Unio pictorum, is a species of medium-sized freshwater mussel, an aquatic bivalve mollusk in the family Unionidae, the river mussels.
This species lives in Europe.
This is called "painter's mussel" because the shell was historically used as a conveniently sized and shaped receptacle for holding artist's paint.
Distribution
Its native distribution is Europe.

- Germany

- Listed as specially protected species in annex 1 in Bundesartenschutzverordnung.
- Netherlands - Common (algemeen) [6]
- Slovakia - not in red lists
- Sweden - not so common, scattered occurrence[7]
- British Isles - mostly in England
